Best Friend Sets Her Sights On Woman’s Freshly Single Ex, Gets A Brutal Reality Check Instead

Twenty-nine-year-old Hannah had always believed that friendships were supposed to survive difficult moments, especially when romantic relationships ended. She had been close to her best friend Lauren for more than ten years, and the two women had shared almost everything about their lives. They had supported each other through career changes, family problems, and countless relationship ups and downs. When Hannah’s long-term relationship with Ryan finally ended, Lauren was one of the first people she called. The breakup had been painful because Hannah and Ryan had been together for nearly five years, but she knew the relationship had reached a point where neither of them was truly happy. Hannah told Lauren that she needed time to heal and did not want to think about dating again anytime soon. What she did not expect was that Lauren would soon begin showing a surprising amount of interest in Ryan.
At first, Hannah tried to ignore the small signs. Lauren began asking how Ryan was doing, whether he was dating anyone, and whether Hannah still spoke to him. Hannah thought the questions were simply part of Lauren trying to understand what had happened. But then Lauren started bringing Ryan up during unrelated conversations. She mentioned that she had always thought he was attractive and claimed that she had never understood why Hannah complained about certain things in their relationship. Hannah eventually confronted her and asked directly whether she was interested in Ryan. Lauren laughed and insisted that she was only curious. She told Hannah that since they were no longer together, Ryan was technically free to date whoever he wanted. Hannah agreed with that in principle, but she reminded Lauren that their breakup was still fresh and that pursuing her ex would be extremely hurtful. Lauren dismissed her concerns, saying that Hannah needed to move on instead of acting like she still had some kind of claim over Ryan.
Within weeks, Lauren became much more direct. She started liking Ryan’s social media posts, responding to his stories, and finding excuses to be around him whenever their mutual friends gathered. Hannah was uncomfortable but initially refused to create a bigger conflict. She reminded herself that she could not control Ryan’s choices or decide who Lauren was allowed to date. However, what bothered her most was that Lauren seemed to be treating the situation like a competition. Lauren repeatedly told Hannah that she and Ryan might actually be a better match and suggested that Hannah had failed to appreciate him. Eventually, Lauren sent Ryan a message asking him to meet privately. Ryan later showed Hannah the message because he did not want to hide anything from her. Instead of being flattered, he was uncomfortable with how quickly Lauren had moved toward him after the breakup. He told Hannah that he had no interest in dating her best friend and that the entire situation made him question Lauren’s intentions.
The real confrontation happened when Lauren discovered that Ryan had rejected her. She became angry and accused Hannah of interfering. According to Lauren, Hannah must have said something negative about her or convinced Ryan not to give her a chance. Hannah was stunned because she had not asked Ryan to reject Lauren. Ryan had made that decision himself. He eventually joined the conversation and explained that he simply did not see Lauren romantically and was uncomfortable with how aggressively she had pursued him. He also told Lauren that her behavior had made him realize he wanted even more distance from the situation. Lauren tried to argue that she deserved an opportunity because Ryan was single, but Ryan responded that being single did not mean he owed her a relationship. Hannah watched as Lauren’s confidence disappeared when she realized that neither of them was going to play the role she had expected.
The experience became a painful reality check for Lauren and a turning point in Hannah’s friendship. Hannah told Lauren that the biggest issue was not simply wanting to date her ex. She was hurt because Lauren had ignored her feelings, treated the breakup like an opportunity, and then blamed Hannah when Ryan rejected her. Hannah made it clear that she did not consider Ryan her property and never had, but she expected her best friend to show basic consideration during such a sensitive period. Lauren eventually apologized, although Hannah admitted that the apology did not immediately repair the damage. Their friendship became distant, and Hannah decided that she needed to focus on rebuilding her own life rather than worrying about whether Lauren understood her mistake. Ironically, Lauren had believed that pursuing Hannah’s freshly single ex would lead to a new relationship, but instead she lost the opportunity with Ryan and seriously damaged the friendship she had taken for granted.

AITA for telling one of my best friends that she was absolutely not my ex-bf’s type
My(f32) ex-bf (m35) and I broke up about 5 months ago after 4 years together. He is the most amazing guy and I love him so much. These past months have been the worst in my life. He is very handsome and successful and rich (relevant). I’m sure he will not have any problems getting into a new relationship. He broke up with me because we don’t want the same things. He wants children and a family and I don’t. I think we stayed together for so long even though we knew we wanted different, we probably kind of thought we would change or change each other and that love is all it matters. I still love him but I don’t know if he still loves me. When we broke up I asked for a clean break. It means no contact because I needed to get over him.
My friends know all this and they know how much I love him. One of my best friends, f28, jokingly said that he was up for grabs a month after we broke up. I ignored her. I thought it was a bad joke. She is very beautiful and she basically can get whoever she wants (she always said that she never been rejected before and I believe her). I know my ex didn’t really like her because she wants a rich guy and because she had done a lot of plastic surgeries.
Last time we had dinner she brought up wanting to date him and one other friend said that we didn’t do that to each other. She laughed it off and I said well you can try. But you are not his type. She said that she never been rejected before and this is where I might have been an AH. I told her he didn’t like greedy girls with lip injections and fake breasts. She started crying telling me now she won’t feel sorry taking him because I’m a b and an ah. My friends sided with her on this.
I waited until I was in my car to start crying. I don’t think I’m the AH. She knows I still love him and not over him. Couldn’t she wait at least? I know she is panicking because she kept saying that he won’t be single for long. I don’t know. Tell me if I should apologize
update
Thank you very much for not finding me an AH. My gut feeling was right about this situation then.
I talked to a mutual friend today. My former best friend has asked my ex for dinner about 2 weeks ago (the same week we hade our fight). She took him to one of my favorite restaurants that she knows we both loved. Anyway after the dinner he stopped answering her calls/texts. I don’t know what happened there and why he agreed to having dinner with her and I can’t help but cry and feel hurt. I know this is juvenile and I ned to let him go but I could stop crying anyway. But I need to work on myself and move on. I love him and I want him to be happy. I can’t start crying of the mere thought of him moving on.
My former best friend is angry with me and have told our mutual friends that I have forbidden him from seeing her and that’s why he didn’t text her back or answer her calls. I said that this wasn’t true and that I haven’t had any contact with him since I moved out. I don’t know if our friends believe me or her. I feel like I don’t have the energy to care if they do or not. When everything settles down and everyone moved on, the ones that care about me will stay in my life. The rest, well they’re not worth being sad about losing.
Hannah and Ryan’s Five-Year Relationship Comes to an End
Twenty-nine-year-old Hannah had always believed that true friendship meant being there for each other through both good and difficult times. She had known her best friend Lauren since college, and over the years, they had become extremely close. They had celebrated birthdays together, supported each other through family problems, and shared countless personal secrets. Hannah trusted Lauren enough to discuss her relationship with Ryan, her boyfriend of nearly five years. Their relationship had not been perfect, but Hannah had genuinely believed they would eventually get married. Unfortunately, after months of arguments and growing differences, Hannah and Ryan finally decided to separate. The breakup was painful, but Hannah knew it was the right decision for both of them.

Hannah was emotionally exhausted after the breakup and told Lauren that she needed some time alone. She did not want to immediately start dating again or hear suggestions about meeting new people. She simply wanted to process everything and figure out what her life would look like without Ryan. Lauren appeared supportive and spent several evenings talking with Hannah about the relationship. She told her that she deserved someone who appreciated her and promised to help her get through the difficult period. Hannah was grateful for the support and never suspected that Lauren’s interest in the situation was more complicated than she realized.
A few weeks after the breakup, Lauren started asking unusual questions about Ryan. She wanted to know whether Hannah was still talking to him, whether he had started dating anyone, and whether there was any possibility that they might get back together. Hannah found the questions slightly strange but did not think much of them. She assumed Lauren was simply curious because Ryan had been part of their lives for so many years. When Lauren casually mentioned that she had always thought Ryan was attractive, Hannah laughed awkwardly and changed the subject.
Soon, however, Lauren began bringing Ryan up more frequently. She would mention his social media posts or ask Hannah whether Ryan was doing well at work. Sometimes she would even compare him to the men she was dating. Hannah started feeling uncomfortable and eventually asked Lauren directly if she was interested in Ryan. Lauren denied it and told Hannah that she was simply curious. She also reminded Hannah that Ryan was no longer her boyfriend and was free to date whoever he wanted. Hannah agreed that Ryan was technically single, but she explained that the breakup was still very recent and that seeing her best friend pursue him would be extremely painful.
Lauren responded by accusing Hannah of being possessive. She told her that she could not expect Ryan to remain unavailable simply because Hannah was still recovering from the breakup. Hannah explained that she was not trying to control Ryan or claim ownership over him. Her concern was about Lauren, the person she considered her closest friend. She expected Lauren to understand that some situations required sensitivity. Instead, Lauren insisted that if two single adults liked each other, there was nothing wrong with them exploring a relationship.
Over the next several weeks, Lauren’s behavior became increasingly obvious. She started following Ryan more closely on social media and frequently liked or commented on his posts. She also began appearing at gatherings where she knew Ryan would be present. Whenever Hannah mentioned that she found the situation uncomfortable, Lauren told her that she was imagining things. Hannah tried not to make the situation into a bigger conflict because she did not want to lose her friendship over something that might never happen.
Then one evening, Lauren admitted that she had been thinking about Ryan seriously. She told Hannah that she had always believed he was attractive and that she thought they might actually be compatible. Hannah was shocked that Lauren was saying this so openly, especially while Hannah was still trying to recover emotionally. Lauren insisted that she was not trying to hurt her and claimed that Hannah should be happy if Ryan eventually found someone who made him happy.
Hannah asked Lauren whether she would feel the same way if the situation were reversed. She asked how Lauren would react if her best friend suddenly started pursuing her recently single ex. Lauren became defensive and said that she would not care because people were allowed to make their own decisions. Hannah did not believe her answer. She felt that Lauren was simply trying to justify something she already wanted to do.
Eventually, Lauren contacted Ryan directly. She sent him a message suggesting that they should meet for drinks and talk. Ryan was surprised because he had never shown romantic interest in Lauren. He knew she was Hannah’s best friend and considered the situation inappropriate. Instead of hiding the message, Ryan showed Hannah what Lauren had written. Hannah was embarrassed and hurt, but she also appreciated Ryan’s honesty.
Ryan told Hannah that he had no intention of dating Lauren. He explained that he was still processing his own feelings about their breakup and did not want to become involved in unnecessary drama. He also said that Lauren’s approach made him uncomfortable because she seemed to believe that being single automatically made him available to her.
Hannah decided not to confront Lauren immediately. She wanted to give her a chance to explain herself. When she finally asked Lauren about the message, Lauren admitted that she had invited Ryan out. Rather than apologizing, however, she argued that she had done nothing wrong. She said Ryan was single and that Hannah had no right to tell her who she could date.
Hannah calmly explained that she had never tried to control Ryan or Lauren. She told her friend that what hurt was the lack of consideration. Their breakup was still fresh, and Lauren knew exactly how emotionally difficult it had been. Hannah expected her best friend to understand that pursuing Ryan immediately afterward would create unnecessary pain.
Lauren responded that Hannah needed to move on. She said that if Hannah really cared about Ryan’s happiness, she should not be upset if he found someone else. Hannah agreed with that statement in theory, but she reminded Lauren that the issue was not Ryan dating someone else. The issue was that her best friend had chosen to pursue him despite knowing how vulnerable Hannah was.
The conversation ended badly. Lauren accused Hannah of secretly wanting Ryan back and claimed that jealousy was the real reason she was upset. Hannah denied it. She explained that she had accepted the breakup and was not planning to reconcile with Ryan. What she could not accept was feeling betrayed by someone she had trusted completely.
A few days later, Ryan received another message from Lauren. This time, she was much more direct. She told him that she believed they would be a better match than he and Hannah had been. She also suggested that he should give her a chance before deciding that nothing could happen between them.
Ryan finally decided to respond clearly. He told Lauren that he was not interested in a romantic relationship with her. He said he respected her as Hannah’s friend but did not feel any attraction toward her. He also explained that her persistence was making the situation uncomfortable and that he wanted her to stop pursuing him.
Lauren was apparently shocked by the rejection. She had convinced herself that Ryan would eventually recognize how compatible they were. Instead, he made it clear that he had never viewed her romantically. The rejection seemed to hurt her pride, and she immediately blamed Hannah.
Lauren contacted Hannah and accused her of interfering. She claimed that Hannah must have said something negative about her to Ryan. Hannah insisted that she had not. She told Lauren that Ryan was an adult who could make his own decisions and that she had never asked him to reject anyone.
Ryan eventually joined the conversation because he did not want the situation to become an argument between the two women based on assumptions. He told Lauren directly that Hannah had nothing to do with his decision. He said he rejected her because he was not interested and because her approach had made him uncomfortable.
That was the moment Lauren finally realized that the situation was not about Hannah controlling Ryan. Ryan had independently decided that he did not want a relationship with her. Being single did not mean he owed her a chance, and being attracted to someone did not guarantee that the attraction would be returned.
Hannah felt strangely relieved after hearing Ryan explain himself. For weeks, she had worried that Lauren’s actions would somehow make her look jealous or possessive. Now she understood that she had never been trying to control anyone. She simply expected basic respect from someone who claimed to be her best friend.
The friendship, however, did not recover immediately. Lauren eventually apologized, admitting that she had handled the situation badly. She said that she had become convinced that Ryan was perfect for her and had allowed that idea to override her concern for Hannah’s feelings. She also admitted that being rejected made her react defensively.
Hannah accepted the apology but told Lauren that forgiveness would take time. She could not simply forget how quickly Lauren had ignored her feelings after the breakup. Trust that had taken years to build had been damaged within a few weeks.
Lauren eventually stopped contacting Ryan and gave Hannah some space. She also realized that she had made a serious mistake by treating Hannah’s breakup as an opportunity rather than recognizing it as an emotionally difficult period for her friend. Ryan moved forward with his own life, while Hannah focused on healing and rebuilding her confidence after the breakup.
Looking back, Hannah said the experience taught her an important lesson about friendship and boundaries. She never believed Ryan belonged to her simply because they had dated. He was free to date whoever he wanted, just as Lauren was free to make her own choices. But freedom did not eliminate the need for consideration, especially when a close friend’s emotions were involved.
For Lauren, the experience became a brutal reality check. She had assumed that because Ryan was single, she had a chance with him. She also believed that Hannah’s objections were simply jealousy. Instead, she discovered that Ryan had no romantic interest in her at all, and her actions had damaged one of the most important friendships in her life. Hannah eventually decided to move forward without holding onto anger, but she also became much more careful about who she trusted. In the end, Lauren did not win the relationship she had been chasing, and she nearly lost the friendship she had spent years building.
