MIL Takes Her Baby Fever Out On The Family Dog, Gets What’s Coming To Her For Her Cruelty

When Emily married Daniel, she knew that his mother, Margaret, had one major dream for their future: grandchildren. At first, Emily tried not to take Margaret’s constant comments personally. Every family dinner seemed to include a question about when she and Daniel were going to have a baby. Margaret would smile and say things like, “I’m not getting any younger,” or jokingly ask whether she should start buying baby clothes. Emily and Daniel had been married for two years, but they had decided that they simply were not ready to become parents yet. They wanted more time to focus on their relationship, careers, and financial stability. Unfortunately, Margaret refused to accept that their decision was none of her business. As the months passed, her comments became more frequent and more frustrating. But nobody expected that her disappointment over not having a grandchild would eventually be taken out on the most innocent member of the family—their beloved dog, Max.
Max had been part of Emily and Daniel’s lives long before they got married. He was a friendly, energetic golden retriever who had become like a member of the family. Emily especially loved him because she had adopted him during a difficult period in her life, and Max had always been there to comfort her. Daniel quickly grew attached to him as well, and the couple often joked that Max was their “first baby.” Unfortunately, Margaret absolutely hated hearing that. Every time Emily referred to Max as part of the family, Margaret would roll her eyes and remind them that “a dog is not a child.” Eventually, her irritation became obvious. During one family gathering, Margaret complained that Emily and Daniel were “wasting their parental instincts on a dog” instead of giving her a grandchild. Emily tried to ignore the comment, but Daniel finally told his mother that their decision about having children was private. Margaret became quiet after that, but it was clear that she was not happy. What nobody realized was that she had begun blaming Max for something he had absolutely nothing to do with.
The situation came to a shocking point when Margaret offered to watch Max while Emily and Daniel attended a wedding out of town. They were hesitant at first, but Margaret insisted that she was perfectly capable of taking care of him. She had watched Max before, and although she had never been particularly affectionate toward him, she had never harmed him. When Emily and Daniel returned home the following evening, however, something was clearly wrong. Max was frightened, unusually quiet, and immediately ran behind Emily when Margaret entered the room. At first, they assumed he had simply been nervous while they were away. But over the next few days, they began noticing other things. Max flinched whenever someone raised their voice, refused to go near the room where Margaret had kept him, and seemed terrified whenever he heard her car outside. Emily became increasingly worried and decided to check the security camera they had installed near the entrance of their home. What she saw completely changed the way they viewed Daniel’s mother.
The footage showed that Margaret had not treated Max like a family pet at all. She had repeatedly yelled at him, shoved him away when he approached her, and even locked him outside for long periods despite the uncomfortable weather. At one point, the camera captured Margaret angrily telling Max that he was the reason Daniel and Emily “thought they already had a baby.” Emily was furious, but Daniel was even more shocked. He confronted his mother and demanded an explanation. Instead of apologizing, Margaret insisted that they were overreacting. She claimed that Max was “just a dog” and that she had been trying to teach him discipline. But Daniel refused to accept her excuses. He told her that her frustration over their decision not to have children had nothing to do with Max and that taking her anger out on an innocent animal was cruel and unacceptable. Margaret became defensive and accused Emily of turning Daniel against her, but this time Daniel refused to stay silent. He told his mother that she would no longer be allowed to watch Max, and until she learned to respect their boundaries, she would not be welcome in their home either.
For Margaret, the consequences were immediate. Emily and Daniel stopped including her in many family activities, and Daniel made it clear that rebuilding their relationship would require a sincere apology and a serious change in her behavior. Some relatives initially criticized the couple for being too harsh, arguing that cutting Margaret off over “a dog” was extreme. But Emily and Daniel knew the truth: this was never just about Max. It was about Margaret’s refusal to respect their choices and her willingness to hurt someone innocent because she could not control their lives. Max eventually returned to his happy, energetic self, especially once he realized that Margaret was no longer coming around. Emily and Daniel also became more confident in standing up for themselves. They still had no idea when—or even if—they would decide to have children, but they knew one thing for certain: that decision would always belong to them. And as for Margaret, she learned a painful lesson. If she wanted to remain part of their family, she would have to respect every member of it—including the four-legged one she had once treated as if he did not matter.

MIL kicks our dog, we kick her out of our house
Today my MIL was over and as always, she started to talk about children. We’re married for 8 years now but we don’t have children because we don’t want them and MIL has a hard time to wrap her head around it. She started to wail that we’re going to be too old soon (we’re both 30). And I kind of feel like she thinks our dog has the fault in it. I think she sees our dog as some kind of a hindrance that prevents us from having children because sometimes she says something like ”
If you didn’t have the dog, you could have children more safely ” or ” So weird that you care so much about an animal but don’t even think about having your own child. ” Our German Shepherd is 14 years old now. Of course, my husband and me, we realize that his life is coming to an end and it’s really hard because he has been my dog since I was a teenager and my husband has come to love him even more. He’s like a child to us and it’s very difficult to say goodbye.
He doesn’t have any terminal illnesses though and the vet said that as long as he’s still eating, drinking and walking, we don’t have to think about putting him down yet. So this time MIL got upset because we asked her to close this topic once and for all. Whether or not we have children, is none of her business and we’re definitely not going to have them just because she wants us to. She went out of the living room and to the foyer to get her jacket that was hanging there on the rack.
Between the living room and the foyer, there’s this short hallway and our dog was walking there. I went out of the living room just in time to see MIL snarling ” Get out of the way, you dirty mutt! ” as she kicked him on the side. The dog staggered aside, surprised, as he has never been hit before. Even when he was a puppy and was doing all kinds of mischief, we never ever physically punished him and this bitch wasn’t gonna either. So I was like ” Wtf are you doing? Why would you kick the dog? ” MIL said ” Well why is he getting in my way, moving like a snail! I don’t have time to stand here forever! ” Yes, MIL, the dog is slow. It’s because he’s old and doesn’t have the energy anymore to run around all the time.
So…MOVE YOUR ASS AROUND HIM! Honestly, she could have easily walked past him, the hallway is wide enough. But no, she probably hoped that no one will see her taking her frustration about us not having children out on the dog. I told her that the dog lives in this house and she doesn’t, and she doesn’t have any rights to treat our pet like that.
The dog doesn’t have any fault in anything. If we wanted to have children, we would have them regardless of owning a dog, he’s not an obstacle. And I told her that if she ever does something like that again, I will rip her head off. My husband didn’t see MIL kicking the dog but he heard the noise and came to see what’s going on and I told him that his mother attacked our dog. First, he couldn’t believe it and then he blazed in fury. He was 100% on my side and he told her to leave our house and never come back.
He said she’ll never step over the doorstep of our house because our dog deserves a peaceful remaining time of his life and she’s a danger to him. To be honest, I was pleasantly surprised. I knew he puts me above his mother but I never thought he has that much of a spine. MIL was starting to say something but my husband dragged her into the foyer. He didn’t even let her get dressed. He threw her jacket and her boots out the door ( by the way, it had rained shortly before and the jacket landed in a puddle ) and told her to never contact us again and if we ever decide to have children, she’ll never see them. MIL was offended beyond words, she was like ” All because of one dirty, shedding, unsanitary piece of hair? You’ll both regret it. ” Our dog is fine, in case you’re wondering. My husband insisted that we go to the vet to make sure MIL didn’t cause some internal damage. But everything is ok, as much as it can be in his age. My husband blocked MIL’s phone and it looks like he’s very serious about going NC with her. So am I. I will never understand cruelty towards animals.
At First, Emily Thought Her MIL Was Supportive
When Emily married Daniel, she knew that becoming part of his family would come with its own challenges. His mother, Margaret, had always been outspoken, emotional, and extremely opinionated. At first, Emily actually liked her. Margaret welcomed her into the family, invited her to dinners, remembered her birthday, and often told her that she was grateful Daniel had found someone he loved. But there was one subject that could completely change Margaret’s personality: grandchildren.
Margaret had always dreamed of becoming a grandmother. She talked about it constantly, even before Emily and Daniel were married. She had already imagined herself buying tiny clothes, decorating a nursery, attending school events, and spending weekends with her future grandchildren. Emily understood that becoming a grandmother was important to her, but she also believed that having children was a deeply personal decision that belonged to her and Daniel.
For the first couple of years, Emily and Daniel simply weren’t ready. They loved their life together and wanted to enjoy some time as a married couple before making such a huge decision. They were also focused on their careers and saving money for a house. Neither of them had ruled out having children in the future, but they refused to have a baby simply because someone else was impatient.
Margaret, however, didn’t see things that way. Whenever the family gathered for dinner, she eventually found a way to bring up babies. Sometimes she would make jokes about Emily’s age. Other times she would casually mention that she had already found a crib she liked. She even started sending Emily pictures of baby clothes with messages like, “This would look adorable on my future grandchild.”
Emily initially laughed it off because she didn’t want to create tension. She would simply respond that they would let everyone know when they had news. But Margaret became increasingly persistent. Eventually, her comments stopped sounding like jokes and started sounding like demands.
The couple’s biggest source of comfort during this period was their dog, Max. Max was a golden retriever they had adopted several years earlier, before Emily and Daniel were married. He was incredibly affectionate and had become a central part of their household. Emily often joked that Max was their first child, and Daniel affectionately referred to himself as Max’s “dad.”
To Emily and Daniel, calling Max their baby was simply a loving expression. They knew he was a dog, but he was also a member of their family. They had spent years caring for him, taking him on walks, buying him toys, celebrating his birthdays, and comforting him whenever he was sick or frightened.
Margaret absolutely hated the way they talked about Max.
Every time Emily called him her “baby,” Margaret would make a face. She would say things like, “He’s a dog, not a child,” or, “You two need to stop pretending that a dog is enough.” At first, Daniel tried to ignore it, but eventually even he became uncomfortable with his mother’s comments.
One evening during dinner, Margaret crossed a line. Emily had mentioned that Max had learned a new trick, and Daniel proudly showed everyone a video of him doing it. Everyone laughed except Margaret.
She looked at the phone and said, “You know, if you spent half as much energy thinking about having a real baby as you do training that dog, I might actually get to become a grandmother.”
The entire table went silent.
Daniel immediately told his mother that their decision about children was none of her business. Margaret became defensive and claimed she was only expressing how much she wanted grandchildren. Emily tried to calm everyone down, but she could tell something had changed.
After that evening, Margaret’s attitude toward Max became noticeably colder.
Whenever she visited, she barely acknowledged him. If Max approached her for attention, she would push him away with her foot or tell him to leave. Emily noticed it but assumed Margaret simply didn’t like dogs very much.
Then Margaret began making comments that made Emily uncomfortable.
She once said, “Maybe once you have a baby, you’ll finally realize how ridiculous it is to treat an animal like a child.”
Another time, she told Daniel, “That dog has had your attention long enough.”
Daniel immediately told her to stop talking about Max that way. Margaret insisted she was joking, but there was something bitter behind her smile.
A few weeks later, Emily and Daniel had to travel out of town for a family wedding. They needed someone to watch Max for two nights. Normally they would have hired a pet sitter, but Margaret volunteered.
She insisted that Max already knew her and that she would happily take care of him. Emily was hesitant because of Margaret’s recent behavior, but Daniel reminded her that his mother had watched Max once before without any problems.
Eventually, they agreed.
Before leaving, Emily gave Margaret detailed instructions about Max’s food, medication, walking schedule, and sleeping routine. Margaret rolled her eyes and told her she knew how to take care of a dog.
Emily kissed Max goodbye and told him they would be back soon.
What happened during those two days was something Emily and Daniel would never forget.
When they returned home, Max immediately ran toward Emily. Normally, he would have jumped around excitedly, wagging his tail and bringing one of his toys to greet them.
This time, he didn’t.
He stayed close to Emily’s legs and kept looking toward the hallway.
Emily immediately knew something was wrong.
She asked Margaret whether Max had been okay. Margaret casually replied that he had been “a little difficult” and claimed that he had been whining too much.
Daniel asked what she meant by “difficult.”
Margaret shrugged and said, “He needed discipline. You two have spoiled him terribly.”
That answer bothered Emily, but she didn’t want to accuse anyone without knowing what had happened.
Over the next few days, however, Max’s behavior became increasingly strange. He stopped going near the guest room where Margaret had stayed with him. He became nervous whenever someone raised their voice and started hiding whenever he heard a loud noise.
Emily also noticed that Max seemed afraid of the back door.
That made no sense because he normally loved going outside.
Daniel suggested that they check the security camera footage. They had cameras around the house, primarily for security, and one of them covered the back entrance.
What they saw left both of them speechless.
The footage showed Margaret repeatedly yelling at Max. In one recording, Max approached her while she was sitting outside, and she angrily shoved him away.
In another, she grabbed his collar and forced him away from the door.
But the worst moment came when Margaret started talking to him as though he were responsible for Emily and Daniel not having children.
She told Max that he had taken up all their attention and that “because of you, they think they don’t need a real family.”
Emily could hardly believe what she was hearing.
Daniel watched the footage several times, hoping he had misunderstood something.
He hadn’t.
Margaret had been taking her frustration over their decision not to have children out on an innocent animal.
When Daniel confronted his mother, Margaret initially denied doing anything wrong. She said she had only been “disciplining” Max and accused Emily of exaggerating the situation.
Daniel told her that yelling at and frightening their dog wasn’t discipline.
It was cruelty.
Margaret became angry and claimed everyone was treating her like a monster simply because she desperately wanted grandchildren. She said Emily had manipulated Daniel into choosing a dog over his own mother.
That statement was the final straw.
Daniel told her that she wasn’t being punished for wanting grandchildren. She was being held accountable for hurting an innocent animal because she couldn’t control her son’s choices.
He also told her that she would never be allowed to take care of Max again.
For several weeks, Margaret refused to apologize.
Instead, she complained to other relatives and claimed Emily had “destroyed the family” over a dog. Some relatives initially believed her version of events and criticized Emily and Daniel for being too sensitive.
But then Daniel showed them the security footage.
Once they saw what had actually happened, the family stopped defending Margaret.
Several relatives told her directly that she had crossed a serious line.
Eventually, Margaret apologized, but Daniel made it clear that an apology wasn’t enough. Trust had been damaged, and rebuilding it would take time. She was no longer allowed to be alone with Max, and she was expected to respect their boundaries regarding children.
Max slowly returned to his normal personality. He started playing again, became comfortable going outside, and eventually stopped hiding whenever someone raised their voice.
Emily and Daniel also learned an important lesson from the entire experience.
They realized that someone who refused to respect a simple boundary about children might eventually ignore even bigger boundaries.
They still didn’t know whether they would become parents. They might someday decide that they wanted children, or they might continue building a life that looked completely different from what Margaret had imagined.
But they knew that no child should ever be brought into the world simply to satisfy someone else’s expectations.
As for Margaret, she finally understood that her obsession with becoming a grandmother had cost her something far more important: the trust of her own son and daughter-in-law.
She had wanted to become part of their future so badly that she forgot to appreciate the family she already had.
And Max, the dog she had blamed for their decision not to have children, ended up becoming the very reason everyone finally saw Margaret’s true behavior.
In the end, the couple didn’t have to choose between Max and Margaret.
Margaret made that choice herself when she decided that her desire for a grandchild mattered more than treating their family—and their beloved dog—with kindness and respect.
