Mom Wants To Help Daughter With Baby Twins To Mend Fences Between Them, Son And DIL Call Her Out

Mom Wants To Help Daughter With Baby Twins To Mend Fences Between Them, Son And DIL Call Her Out

Family relationships can become complicated when major life changes bring old disagreements to the surface. For one mother, the arrival of her daughter’s twins seemed like an opportunity to repair a relationship that had been strained for some time. She believed that helping her daughter during the exhausting first months of parenthood could bring the family closer together. However, her son and daughter-in-law saw the situation very differently.

The mother had two adult children who had gradually developed very different relationships with her. While she remained close to her daughter, things with her son had become increasingly difficult. Disagreements, misunderstandings, and unresolved feelings had created distance between them. Her relationship with her daughter-in-law had also become uncomfortable, and family gatherings were no longer as relaxed as they once had been.

When the daughter became pregnant with twins, the mother immediately wanted to help. She understood that caring for two newborns at the same time could be exhausting, particularly during the first few months. She offered to prepare meals, help with household chores, and spend time with the babies so her daughter could rest. In her mind, helping was simply what a mother should do when her child needed support.

However, her son and daughter-in-law were not convinced that the situation was as simple as she believed. They felt that their mother had already been taking sides in family disagreements and believed she was using the twins as an opportunity to rebuild her relationship with her daughter while continuing to ignore the problems between them. They were concerned that the growing distance between family members would become even more obvious.

The mother insisted that her intentions were not about choosing one child over another. She explained that her daughter had just become responsible for two babies and needed practical support. She believed that if she could be there during such an important period, the family might eventually move beyond their disagreements. She also hoped that spending more time together would remind everyone that they were still a family despite their past conflicts.

Her son and daughter-in-law, however, interpreted her behavior differently. They felt that she was expecting them to simply forget everything that had happened because a new generation had arrived. They reportedly told her that helping with the twins was not a substitute for addressing the issues that had caused their relationship to deteriorate in the first place.

The conversation became particularly emotional when the mother explained that she wanted to “mend fences” between everyone. Her son responded that rebuilding a relationship required more than showing up with food or offering to babysit. He wanted his mother to acknowledge the problems that had occurred between them and understand why he and his wife had become distant.

The daughter-in-law also reportedly expressed her frustration. She did not want to prevent her mother-in-law from helping with the babies, but she felt uncomfortable with the idea that the twins were being treated as a way to repair adult relationships. From her perspective, the newborns should not be placed in the middle of an existing family dispute.

The mother was hurt by their reaction because she genuinely believed she was trying to do something positive. She felt that everyone was focusing on the past instead of appreciating the opportunity to move forward. Her goal had been to support her daughter while creating an environment where the entire family could eventually reconnect. Instead, her offer of help had opened another difficult conversation about favoritism, unresolved resentment, and boundaries.

Eventually, the family realized that helping with the twins and repairing damaged relationships were two separate issues. The mother could support her daughter without expecting that assistance to automatically resolve her conflict with her son and daughter-in-law. At the same time, her son and daughter-in-law had to decide whether they were willing to have an honest conversation about the past. The situation remained complicated, but it showed that even when someone has good intentions, rebuilding family relationships requires communication, accountability, and respect for everyone’s boundaries.

Secondary account as my family knows my main one.

I (49F) found out a few months ago that my daughter (24) was pregnant. We don’t have the best relationship, and I won’t get into all the details, but I definitely have my fair share of the blame.

Despite that, I was thrilled to find out I was going to be a grandma. My daughter lives abroad, so I told her I’d be happy to come over and help once she had the baby. She agreed, and we planned for me to arrive a few weeks before her due date and stay until the baby was around two-three months old. My husband will be there for the birth and leave shortly after as he needs to work. We later found out she was having twins, so she would obviously need even more help. Honestly, I was just happy that she was willing to have me there and let me be involved. Our relationship had been improving, and I really wanted to build on that.

A few weeks after my daughter announced her pregancy, my son (28) announced that he and his wife were also expecting their first baby. I was also very happy, I mean it’s two grandbabies, who wouldn’t be ? I absolutely adore my DIL and have known her for about ten years, so she’s like a daughter to me.

A few days ago, my son mentioned that I’d need to change my return date and come back a month earlier because he wanted me to be there to help him and my DIL after the baby was born.

I was taken aback and told him that I absolutely planned to help them, but I wasn’t going to change my return date. My daughter would be abroad with two 2 months old babies and would essentially be on her own, whereas my DIL would have her own mother there to help her (they’re super close), and I’d be back shortly after the birth anyway.

My DIL was there and immediately got upset. She said it wasn’t fair that my daughter was getting all of my help and support when she and I were actually closer than my daughter and I were. She said I was favoring one grandchild over another, that her child was being put aside for two other babies. I tried explaining that I don’t have a favorite grandchild, and that this wasn’t about choosing the twins over her child. I just didn’t think it was fair to leave my daughter and her boyfriend stranded with newborn twins when my DIL would have her own mother helping and suppoting her and would have me there shortly afterward.

That didn’t seem to console her. She told me that I was like a mother to her and that she deserved to have me there with her. She also said that my daughter didn’t even care about our relationship and had always been dismissive toward me. I’ll admit, I got kind of angry when she started talking about my daughter that way. After a while, I told them they were both being entitled and that she should never expect me to choose her over my own daughter. They both got angry and immediately left. My son called me the next day and told me I was a horrible person and a horrible grandmother. Apparently, her family agrees with them (of course lol). My husband thinks I was right and that they were being entitled. I honestly don’t know what to do anymore. I feel like I made a commitment to my daughter, and it wouldn’t be fair to disappoint her, especially when our relationship has only recently started improving and we’ve been bonding over the pregnancy and baby stuff.

So, AITAH here ?

Edit : Thank you so much for all of your comments, I will continue to try and read all of them. However, I ask that people do not try and make assumptions about my daughter. No, she did not leave the country because she’s an ah, she left because she got a great opportunity for school and is now working there, she plans on coming back in a few years with her boyfriend and the children. We weren’t going on no-contact, we just aren’t as close as we used to be, she is a wonderful person and she is not using me as a maid. Asking me to choose one child because they talk to me more is coming from people that clearly don’t have kids. Please don’t try to attack them.

Edit 2 : I have called my son and will be going over to their house tomorrow to talk it out. I can make an update post if you’re interested since I didn’t expect so many people to react to this post.

Mom Sees Twins’ Arrival as a Chance to Heal Family Tensions

Family relationships can become complicated when old disagreements are left unresolved for years. For one mother, the arrival of her daughter’s twin babies seemed like a chance to bring everyone closer together. She believed the difficult period surrounding the birth could become an opportunity to put past arguments aside and rebuild family connections.

The mother had two adult children, a son and a daughter. Although she loved both of them, her relationships with them had developed differently over the years. She had remained particularly close to her daughter, while her relationship with her son had become strained following several disagreements.

Her son’s marriage had added another layer of tension to the situation. His wife, the daughter-in-law, had also developed an uncomfortable relationship with the mother. There had been misunderstandings and arguments between them, and eventually the son and his wife began keeping more distance from the rest of the family.

The mother did not believe the situation was beyond repair. She felt that too much time had already been wasted because of disagreements that could potentially be resolved through better communication. She wanted everyone to eventually return to having a normal family relationship.

When her daughter announced that she was expecting twins, the mother immediately became excited. The pregnancy was already going to bring major changes to her daughter’s life, and having two babies at once meant there would likely be an enormous amount of work involved.

The mother began thinking about how she could help after the babies arrived. She offered to prepare meals, help with laundry, clean the house, and take care of the babies whenever her daughter needed some rest.

Her daughter welcomed the idea because she knew the first few months with twins could be exhausting. Having someone available to help with everyday responsibilities could make a major difference.

The mother also saw another possibility in the situation. She believed that spending time around the babies could create opportunities for the family to interact without immediately returning to old arguments.

She hoped that the excitement surrounding the twins would give everyone something positive to focus on. In her mind, family members could slowly reconnect while celebrating the arrival of the new babies.

However, her son did not see the situation the same way.

When he learned how involved his mother planned to be, he reportedly became uncomfortable. He believed that his mother was once again prioritizing his sister while expecting him and his wife to simply accept the situation.

He also felt that the arrival of the twins did not erase the problems that had caused their relationship to deteriorate. There were still unresolved issues between him, his mother, and his wife.

The son eventually discussed the situation with his wife. Together, they agreed that they needed to speak honestly with his mother rather than allowing resentment to continue building.

During their conversation, the mother explained that she was not trying to exclude them. She said she simply wanted to help her daughter because she was about to become a mother to two babies at once.

She also explained that she hoped her involvement could help repair the relationship between everyone. She believed that being around the newborns could create positive family memories and make it easier for them to move beyond the past.

Her son, however, challenged that idea.

He told his mother that repairing their relationship required more than spending time together because of the babies. He felt that the underlying problems needed to be discussed directly.

His wife agreed with him. She explained that she appreciated the mother’s desire to help her daughter, but she did not want the twins to become a tool for resolving conflicts between adults.

The daughter-in-law reportedly felt particularly uncomfortable with the idea that the family should suddenly become close simply because two babies had arrived. She believed relationships needed to be repaired through honest conversations rather than through circumstances.

The mother was surprised by their reaction. From her perspective, she was offering support rather than creating another conflict.

She explained that she did not want to take sides. She loved both of her children and wanted to be involved in their lives. Her intention was to support her daughter during a difficult period while also creating an opportunity for the family to reconnect.

Her son responded that intentions were not the only thing that mattered. He wanted his mother to understand how her previous actions had affected him and his wife.

He also argued that helping his sister did not automatically make the previous problems disappear. If anything, he said, the situation made him feel that his concerns were being ignored again.

The conversation became emotional because everyone had a different understanding of what “moving forward” actually meant.

The mother believed moving forward meant putting the past behind them and focusing on the future. Her son believed moving forward required acknowledging what had happened before forgiveness and reconciliation could take place.

The daughter was also placed in an uncomfortable position. She appreciated her mother’s help but did not want her pregnancy and newborn children to become the center of a larger family dispute.

She reportedly told her mother that she wanted the twins to bring happiness to the family rather than become a reason for everyone to argue.

Eventually, the mother began to understand why her son and daughter-in-law had reacted so strongly. She realized that although her offer was motivated by love, they viewed it through the history of their relationship.

She also recognized that she could support her daughter without expecting that support to repair every damaged relationship in the family.

The son and daughter-in-law, meanwhile, understood that the mother genuinely wanted to help and was not necessarily trying to hurt them. They still wanted their concerns taken seriously, but they did not want the conflict to continue affecting the rest of the family.

The family eventually agreed that the twins should remain separate from the adult disagreements. The mother could spend time helping her daughter and meeting her grandchildren, while conversations about the strained relationships could happen privately and without placing pressure on the new parents.

The situation did not magically solve years of family tension, but it gave everyone a better understanding of the problem.

The mother learned that good intentions do not always produce the result someone expects. Her desire to help her daughter had been sincere, but her son and daughter-in-law needed something different from her before they could feel comfortable rebuilding their relationship.

For the family, the arrival of the twins ultimately became a reminder that reconciliation cannot be forced simply because there is a happy event. Relationships damaged over time usually require patience, honest communication, and a willingness from everyone involved to acknowledge what happened.

The mother still wanted to be present for her daughter and grandchildren, but she also understood that repairing her relationship with her son and daughter-in-law would have to happen separately. Instead of using the twins as a bridge, the adults would need to build that bridge themselves.
