Cop Finds Nothing Wrong With Cheating On His GF, Confused That Gym Bro Ends Friendship Over It

Thirty-one-year-old Ryan had built a reputation as someone who valued discipline and confidence. As a police officer, he often spoke about responsibility, integrity, and earning people’s trust. Outside of work, he spent nearly every evening at a local gym, where he became close friends with Marcus, a fitness coach who shared his passion for weightlifting. The two trained together for years, encouraging each other through difficult workouts and celebrating personal milestones. Ryan had also been dating his girlfriend, Emily, for almost three years, and many of their friends assumed an engagement was only a matter of time. On the surface, everything in Ryan’s life appeared stable and successful.
That image began to crack when Ryan casually admitted to Marcus that he had been seeing another woman for several months while still in a relationship with Emily. Instead of expressing guilt, Ryan shrugged it off as though it were completely normal. He insisted that as long as Emily never found out, nobody was getting hurt. Marcus was stunned by how casually his friend dismissed the betrayal. He reminded Ryan that loyalty wasn’t just something to expect from others—it was something a person had to practice in every part of life. Ryan laughed, claiming that relationships were complicated and that Marcus was taking the situation far too seriously.
Over the next few weeks, the topic continued to create tension between them. Ryan repeatedly joked about hiding messages and making excuses whenever Emily asked questions, expecting Marcus to find the stories amusing. Instead, Marcus became increasingly uncomfortable. He realized that if Ryan could repeatedly deceive someone he claimed to love, it raised difficult questions about his character as a whole. Their conversations during workouts became shorter, and eventually Marcus stopped inviting Ryan to train together. When Ryan finally asked why he had become so distant, Marcus answered honestly: he couldn’t maintain a close friendship with someone who treated dishonesty as if it were a harmless personality trait.
Ryan was genuinely confused by Marcus’s reaction. He argued that his personal relationship had nothing to do with their friendship and accused Marcus of judging him unfairly. Marcus calmly explained that friendship was built on shared values as much as shared interests. He wasn’t ending the friendship because Ryan had made one mistake; he was stepping away because Ryan showed no remorse and refused to acknowledge the pain his actions could cause. To Marcus, the issue wasn’t simply cheating—it was Ryan’s belief that betrayal was acceptable as long as it remained hidden.

Months later, Ryan found himself reflecting on everything after Emily eventually learned the truth and ended their relationship. Around the same time, Marcus had moved on with new training partners and kept his distance. Looking back, Ryan finally understood that trust, once broken, affects far more than a single relationship. His choices had cost him both a partner and a close friend who had expected better from him. The experience became a difficult reminder that honesty and accountability shape how others see us, and dismissing the consequences of betrayal can damage relationships in ways that are not easily repaired.

My [26M] gym buddy [35M] is cheating on my sister’s [28F] best friend [30F]. I told him we can’t be friends anymore. Am I wrong?
I used to train alone, because I don’t have to take others into account. I have a very irregular schedule and long hours so this works for me. I train whenever I can. I also lift pretty heavy. I met Ben [35M] eight months ago. He joined my gym and we hit it off. He talked to me and asked me if he could train in with me. I was hesitant, but I could use a spotter sometimes. He’s a cop and surprisingly has the same irregular shifts as me. His lifting stats are very close to mine. We started working out together and pushing/motivating each other for higher PR’s. As guys do, we started talking about hook ups, dating and life in general during sets and sometimes we hung out outside of the gym as well. He told me he was dating around and had a few fuck buddies. I thought nothing serious, or exclusive because he was seeing several at the same time.
One day my sister [28F] came to the gym with me. Ben was there too. She recognized Ben as the boyfriend of her best friend Allie [30F]. I asked her if she was sure and what does she mean boyfriend/if they were exclusive. She told me yeah and of course they are exclusive. I quickly changed the subject.
The next time I met Ben at the gym I asked him after our work out about Allie and he confirmed he was indeed dating her. I asked him if she knew about the other girls, he said no she did not. He was basically cheating on her. I felt very guilty and conflicted. I told him I knew Allie and she was a very nice girl and didn’t deserve this kind of behaviour. I said we could no longer be friends and I didn’t want to train together anymore. I told him to cut all contact.
He said he didn’t understand what had changed and said we were good friend and I shouldn’t throw this away. I have to say a part of me still wants to train with him and hang out, because I thought he was a good guy, but then I feel incredibly guilty towards Allie and know I can’t do that to her. Our gym sessions were great and I always felt pumped up. I told Ben ‘No’ and stop texting and/or calling me. He still does and it’s kinda awkward at the gym, but I ignore him. He still wants to be friends. Am I wrong?
Is it my place to tell Allie to dump this guy, because he’s a cheater? Often time the harbinger of bad news gets crucified so I don’t want to tell my sister and burden her with this knowledge and task of telling Allie. What should I do? Tell Allie? Tell my sister? Shrug it off and still train and hang out with Ben?
tl;dr: Found out my gym buddy is the cheating boyfriend of my sisters friend. I got off contact. Am I wrong? Who should tell Allie if anyone?

You’re not wrong for not wanting to be friends with people who do shitty things.

Frankly, I think what OP did was an incredible sign of his character. Plenty of people would have felt uncomfortable, but would still continue to work out with the scummy cop to avoid “awkwardness.” Some people might have gone a step farther and just cut contact, with no explanation.
But OP did the truly honorable, and uncomfortable, thing by explaining why he was cutting the friendship off. Good for you, u/Ninja-Kiwi ; it would be a better world if there were more people like you in it.

I love how he doesn’t even understand the problem.
He didn’t even have an ‘Oh shit!’ reaction when you told him you knew Allie. Normal people who do something wrong would have that reaction. Normal people would understand immediately that you’ve got a conflict of interest here and would swerve into damage control. Excuses, bragging, I’m-reformed. Something to mitigate the chances you’ll tell.
He didn’t. He’s completely, utterly, remorseless about betraying his girlfriend’s trust.
You should tell literally everyone. This guy is insane and everyone should avoid him.

TL;DR of previous Found out my gym buddy was the cheating boyfriend of my sister’s best friend. Cut contact with gym buddy. Gym buddy kept contacting me and wanting to remain friends.
Thank you all for your replies. Some were worried, because Ben is a cop. Well that would never stop me from doing the right thing and am glad I did. I knew I had to tell Allie. You guys gave me the push I needed. I would have wanted to know and would be very upset if someone I knew was aware of my SO cheating and chose not to tell me. I found out the extent of Ben’s douchebaggery. First I told my sister right away that Ben was sleeping around and I wanted to warn Allie. She came with a bombshell! Ben was hitting on her too! That asshole is infuriating me now. Ben sometimes tagged along when my sister and Allie would hang out and Ben would always flirt/hit on my sister. This asshole is making me so furious right now. My sister hadn’t told Allie, because she didn’t want her to get hurt and nothing happened. And never would, because Ben is Allie’s boyfriend and also my sister doesn’t date assholes.
So then I decided to tell Allie. My sister was there too. I decided to take the direct route and rip the truth out like a bushy woman getting a full Brazilian. It would be quick and sting, but not as much as slowly peeling it off. Apparently Allie suspected some douchebaggery going on, because he was being secretive with his phone all of a sudden lately and ‘hide’ when he was texting/turn away the screen etc. Allie was upset, but she did see it coming I guess and was really glad I told her. She said she loved me like a brother of her own and really thanked me for the honesty. She was dumping Ben right away and wants to go No Contact and block him on all media. I was at the gym yesterday and today, but didn’t see him. We’ll see how it goes. I’m not switching gyms because of this asshole. I’ve trained there for years now and know the owner and staff. I really love my gym.
tl;dr: The extent of Ben’s douchebaggery is revealed. I told Allie and she dumped Ben and went NC
A Respected Officer With a Hidden Secret
Thirty-one-year-old Ryan had built a reputation for discipline and confidence. As a police officer, he often spoke about integrity, responsibility, and earning the public’s trust. Outside of work, he spent nearly every evening at the gym with his closest friend, Marcus, a personal trainer who had become like a brother over years of shared workouts and mutual support.

Ryan had also been dating Emily for almost three years. Their relationship looked solid from the outside, and many friends believed an engagement was only a matter of time. Emily trusted Ryan completely and never imagined he was hiding anything from her.

Despite appearing committed, Ryan secretly began seeing another woman. Instead of feeling guilty, he convinced himself that as long as Emily never discovered the truth, no real harm had been done. He viewed it as a private matter rather than a betrayal.
One evening after training, Ryan casually admitted the affair to Marcus while they were cooling down after a workout. He expected his friend to laugh or simply ignore it, but Marcus was stunned into silence.
Marcus asked Ryan whether he planned to end the affair or tell Emily the truth. Ryan shrugged and said there was no reason to create drama when everything was already under control. His lack of remorse surprised Marcus more than the cheating itself.
Over the following days, Marcus couldn’t stop thinking about the conversation. He believed everyone could make mistakes, but Ryan didn’t even consider his actions wrong. Instead, he seemed proud of getting away with them.
When they met at the gym again, Marcus tried to explain why the situation bothered him. He said honesty wasn’t something people practiced only at work—it reflected who they were in every relationship.
Ryan laughed and dismissed the concern. He argued that his romantic life had nothing to do with his friendships and insisted Marcus was judging him unfairly over something that wasn’t his business.
Marcus calmly replied that character mattered. If someone could repeatedly deceive the person they claimed to love, it naturally affected how others viewed their integrity.
Ryan refused to listen. Instead, he joked about hiding messages, deleting phone records, and making excuses whenever Emily became suspicious. Marcus found those stories disturbing rather than funny.
Their workouts became increasingly awkward. Conversations that once lasted hours were replaced by short greetings and long periods of silence between sets.
Other gym members noticed the change in their friendship. People who had always seen them together began asking why they were suddenly training separately.
Marcus avoided discussing the details. He simply said their values no longer aligned and changed the subject whenever anyone pressed for more information.
Ryan became frustrated that Marcus seemed distant. He believed a true friend should support him regardless of his personal choices.
Eventually, Ryan confronted Marcus directly and demanded an explanation. He wanted to know why someone he considered a brother had suddenly pulled away.
Marcus answered honestly. He explained that the friendship wasn’t ending because Ryan had made one bad decision—it was ending because Ryan felt absolutely no responsibility for hurting someone who trusted him.
Ryan insisted Marcus was overreacting. He argued that Emily was happy, their relationship looked normal, and therefore no damage had actually been done.
Marcus responded that harm doesn’t disappear simply because the victim hasn’t discovered the truth yet. Deception itself damages trust, even before it’s exposed.
A few weeks later, Emily accidentally discovered messages that revealed Ryan’s affair. Shocked and heartbroken, she confronted him with the evidence.
Ryan initially denied everything before finally admitting the truth. Instead of accepting responsibility, he blamed misunderstandings and claimed the situation had become much bigger than it deserved.
Emily ended the relationship immediately. She explained that the affair itself was painful, but Ryan’s dishonesty and refusal to acknowledge the betrayal made rebuilding trust impossible.
Soon afterward, Ryan reached out to Marcus, hoping they could move past their disagreement. He admitted losing Emily had been harder than he expected.
Marcus wished Ryan well but declined to rebuild the friendship. He explained that trust was difficult to restore when someone repeatedly justified dishonest behavior instead of learning from it.
For the first time, Ryan began reflecting on the choices that had led to losing both his relationship and his closest friend. He realized that dismissing the consequences of his actions had cost him far more than he ever anticipated.
Months later, Ryan understood a lesson he had once ignored: trust is earned through consistent honesty, and relationships—whether romantic or platonic—depend on integrity. By treating deception as harmless, he had slowly damaged the very connections he valued most, discovering too late that accountability is essential to lasting respect and meaningful relationships.
